For Olga

This post was written by my friend, Patti

Dear friends,
So many of you already know this beautiful little face....

Photobucket

Olga turned five last month. She has spent the last five years in an orphanage in Eastern Europe, without the love of a mommy and daddy- simply because she arrived in life exactly as God designed her. One chromosome too many, and her fate was sealed from birth.

Photobucket

Sealed, because in Eastern Europe, babies who are born with Down syndrome are deemed unacceptable at birth. They are discarded as cast-offs of society, and when they turn five they leave the only home they've ever known...

Photobucket

And I wish I could say that for most of these children, leaving that home meant going to a place of safety, a place of happiness, a place where they would finally know the love of a family...know what it meant to be cuddled or sung to or read to, tucked in at night, prayed for, loved.

Instead, they are taken to a place that most people wouldn't leave their family pet.

A place of living hell, where they will never know the tenderness of a parent, never know the security of being raised in a family, and there they will stay, one ugly, pain-filled day at a time...until they die.

Photobucket

I read a post last December that stayed with me to this day. It was called from baby dolls to bedstraps.

The blog author wrote about Elizabeth, an orphan on Reece's Rainbow who had been transferred to a mental institution, waiting for a family to step forward for her. Her words still haunt me.

I wonder where she thought she was going as they led her out of the orphanage that day. Did she think that maybe it was finally her turn? That they were taking her to her forever Mommy and Daddy?

And when they instead took her inside that dreadful place, when they shaved her head and tied her to a too-small metal crib

when they turned their backs and

walked

away…

when they left her confused, terrified,

in a room where the wails of schizophrenic adults echo through the cold air

what was going through her young mind?

Did she wonder if she was being punished?

How long did she hold out hope that this was only temporary?

That any minute, they would come and take her back to the baby house

to her baby dolls and teddy bear,

to her best friend, Angelina?

Did she long to free her arms from the restraints

to cover her head with her hands to drown out

the scary noises

the scary sights

the scary smells?

That could be my Lily….

It could be your child.

And what if it were?

What if you woke up one morning

and by some hellish, twilight-zone twist of fate

your child wasn’t still tucked into that warm bed down the hall,

what if your child was trapped

across the dark sea

in that nightmare that is

the institution?

What

would

you

DO?

Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. Proverbs 24:11

Elizabeth is being rescued today, thanks to the efforts of that blogging mama, and others like her.

Olga is being rescued today, thanks to so many of you...you gave so much and created such a large grant that a family was able to step forward and start the process of adoption.

The Abells have done so much already, towards rescuing Olga. I can't even imagine all the paperwork and prayer and emotion and finances that goes into an international adoption. They have done numerous fundraisers, and will continue to do so until they can bring Olga home.

Through the help of so many, a grant of over $13,000 has been raised for Olga's adoption. That grant is set aside for the final travel costs and fees that it will take to bring Olga home. It will take every penny of that and then some.

Right now the Abells are in need of raising the $7,000 that is needed to submit their dossier for Olga. Without that dossier we don't even know if Olga has been transferred yet. Here in America you just pick up the phone and ask these questions. But here in America we don't tie five year old girls to cribs to keep them from climbing out.

The Abells need to submit that dossier as soon as possible- at the very least to find out if she has been transferred already- because I know an army of prayer warriors who is going to want to know that piece of information as well. And at the very most, it could be able to hold Olga at the baby house until the Abells can rescue her. I wish I could say with certainty that she won't be transferred- truthfully we just don't know that.

Olga has been so heavy on my heart for months- friends, I want you to know that I DO trust that God has a plan here.

I prayed like crazy for a way to help the Abells. I truly believe that there is a network of people who love Olga here in blogland...a net that is woven by God and is stretching out across this blessed country we live in, and even beyond to generous hearts in other nations. I really cannot express enough how thankful I am to be a small part of what God has already done for Olga, Peter and Kareen. But I don't think our job is done.

Olga needs us.

I don't want her to spend one more forsaken day in that place than she has to.

We're not doing a giveaway here today. I don't even think we need to do one- I know so many just have a heart to help and to give, and prizes were never the real reason we all gave anyway.

So I'm just asking- for one day- for you to do whatever you could to help Olga. Whether that's $10 or $20 or even a hundred...if you are able to help raise this money for the dossier, please do so HERE...

This is the link for the Family Sponsorship Page on Reece's Rainbow
...every single dollar goes to the Abell's adoption fund, and every single dollar will help.

We're calling this A Day to Save Olga, because there are about 17 of us blogging mamas who have set aside this day to blog, post on Facebook, pray, give and spread the word to SAVE OLGA.

Will you help us?

I know you will:)

Love,

Patti

Blog Auctions!

I have to admit, I love me a good blog auction!!  So much fun & excitement -- and so many fun things to bid on!

So, if you feel like shopping for a good cause ... check out these 2 blog auctions!!  And please, pass along these links if you would -- the more bidders, the merrier!  (Unless they want to outbid ME, then that's not merry at all!)

Help my Canuck friend, Sara, bring home her new daughter, Kameron -- their adoption costs are significantly higher, being in Canada.  I met Sara this fall, when she was volunteering with the new Reece's Rainbow website, helping to get it up & running.

Kameron was recently transferred, so they want to get to her FAST.  The good news is, they do believe she is still able to be adopted!

Also, my long-time online friend, Laurie, is in the process of adopting, too!!  Laurie's son Chase is the same age as Ruby ... and her soon-to-be son, Danil, is their age, too.

Danil -- isn't he a handsome bugger?  He's going to have 3 brothers, very soon!

Braden and the Science Fair

Of course Braden wanted to be in the science fair this year!  (Luckily, it was in January, pre-strep...)

He wanted to do a project with Legos (shocking, I know!) so he & Brian did some research ... and came up with this project.

Braden built towers that were 10, 20, 30 & 40 Legos high.  They built an earthquake simulator with a 3 ring binder (remove the rings) and some bouncy balls & rubber bands.

Then, Braden tested the towers.  He'd move the base 1" and see how it held up ... then 2" ... there were 4 different tests.  He tested each tower multiple times for each 'distance' and recorded the results.

Basically, the higher towers fell more, and especially when there was more force.

The project was titled "Look out below!"
and Braden included some facts about earthquakes on his poster board, as well as the results of the testing.

It was quite popular with boys.  Groups of kids would be walking through the science fair, and suddenly someone would yell out, "Look!  Legos!"  and they'd swarm Braden's table.

We are so proud of Braden!!

Strep vs The Zoromskis, round 2

Dear Strep,

You suck!  I never want to see you again!

-------------------------------------

Dear Winter,

You suck, too!  I'm through with you, too!

-------------------------------------

(Dear Mom, Sorry I said sucks, I know you hate that ...)

-------------------------------------

3 kids tested today -- 2 came back positive for strep.  We either didn't get rid of it fully the first time, or they picked it up somewhere else.

We played a fun new trivia game called "Guess who has strep NOW?" and my mom & Brian both answered incorrectly.  The correct answers are:  Ruby & Braden.

Braden also has a plantar's wart -- the doctor said to use duct tape.  Really?  Does that REALLY work?  and he has an infected thumb.   Ruby's ears look infected, too, so ... whatever!  She's already going on antibiotics, again.

-------------------------------------

Dear Warmth & Health,

Please come back, we miss you desperately!

Lilya Updates

Before the great Strep Epidemic of 2011, I brought Lil to the pediatric cardiologist.  This was a 6 month follow-up, and she didn't need an echo.  They did an EKG & looked her over and we made some changes to her care.

Because she has GROWN (YAY!)  we increased her blood pressure med a little bit.  This medication is to help reduce her blood pressure (obviously) in hopes of preserving the life of her repaired valve.

We found out she has a "1st degree Atrioventricular block" which is really an 'electrical' problem with the heart, and not really a blockage.  It's not likely to progress, but if it were to become a 3rd degree, this is the type of problem that could cause someone to need a pacemaker.  We don't anticipate hers ever getting to be that big of a problem -- this is not unusual for children who've had heart repairs.  For now, it will just be monitored routinely and we have to let the doctor know if she were to ever start having fainting spells.

So, while cardiology issues are always serious, there's not really anything urgent -- which is great news!

Lil really has grown, too!  She's at 34 pounds now, and she was only 29 lbs when she came home.  She's taller, now too -- almost 39" (and she was just over 37" when she first came home).

Today, Lil had her 6 month follow-up with the eye doctor.   School was cancelled today , and I'm very grateful my niece was able to come over & stay with the kids so I didn't have to take EVERYONE along with us.

The appointment was quick & easy -- Lil's eyes are looking great, and we don't have to go back for a year!  Unfortunately, they weren't able to help me fix her glasses (a screw came out) ... we really need to get her a backup pair.  SOON.

It's so odd to have these follow-up visits already -- Lil's been home for over 6 months!   I'm not sure where the time goes, and yet it feels like she's always been with us.

Also, it makes me really miss my mom, too -- it was wonderful having her in town last August, so I could easily run the kids to appointments.  Please come visit, Nana & Nice Wolf!  We promise not to work you so hard this time ;)

Matryoshka Dolls

I can't believe I never posted this?!  I found it in my drafts section of my blog from September ... I was sure I had posted it.  I'm so sorry!  I have to say, she liked her gifts, but I LOVE them!!

Along with Lil's super adorable pillow doll, there was another surprise in her package - more matryoshka dolls!

Now these adorable dolls are adhesive and meant to stick to walls, but our walls are very, very bumpy (is that a Midwestern thing?) and they don't stay on our walls, at all.

So we had to be a  bit more creative, and find flat surfaces.

On the closet

and on the shelves.

Aren't they adorable!?

Are you my Mama?

My new favorite quote is from another adoption mom (Amy I), and it goes something like:

There's a big difference between knowing there are orphaned children, and knowing children who are orphans.

This is Antonio.

I've met him.

He lives in Lil's former orphanage, and will be 3 this spring.

He's dainty & delicate & in need of a family to call his own.  Doesn't his face just make you want to scoop him up & snuggle him?

Please help me find his family!

Spread the word! - someone, somewhere will surely see his little face and think, "That's my son!"

If you can, throw $10 in his grant.  The bigger the grant, the easier his adoption goes for his family.

Antonio's little friends Micah & Jackson & Lesia will be adopted this summer, and he really deserves to go home, too.

Nap Time & Lil Tidbits

Ruby passed out on the couch, on a January day ... no socks, but at least her head won't get cold.

And look at Lil - she's looking at a book, all on her own!

It's a Signing Time book - her favorite - and she's signing along as she goes (she's trying to sign "3" like in the picture)

When Lil first came home, she wanted NOTHING to do with books, so this is HUGE!  Not only does she look at books now, but she picked this one up & started looking at it all on her own -- I wasn't even in the room.

Another thing I've caught her doing lately is playing with the baby dolls; she was giving one a bath the other day, with Ruby's baby doll toys.  When she first came home, if we handed her a baby doll, she'd toss it aside. She wanted nothing to do with babies -- real or fake -- and had no idea how to play with dollies or stuffed animals or other imaginary play.  Now we have pretend tea parties, and she giggles like mad while we pretend to eat our fake food.

Tiny Towers

When Ruby was younger, she worked & worked on stacking things with her therapists.  It took her a long time to be able to hold something and release it carefully enough that it would stay put.

Nowadays, I find her stacking things up all around the house, just for fun!

This was tricky -- the blocks on the table were higher than she was!

And of course, knocking them down is still just as fun!

Lots of Love

I'm not really a fan of Valentine's Day ... so I thought I'd share a couple pictures of the little girls, together.

They are always hugging & kissing & yelling at each other ... true, sisterly love!  (Not that I know, since I don't HAVE a sister, but I AM a sister ... )

Anyway.  Where was I?

Oh, yes - this alarming sight:

It can be a little alarming to see the girls hugging sometimes, because it often looks more like a wrestling match, complete with choke holds.

But, see?

Happy girls!

Braden built the Death Star,

so does that make him the next Darth Vadar, or Darth's architect?

The Death Star is a super cool puzzle he got for Christmas.

He probably put it together on Christmas, but I just found some old pics on the camera ... so, you get to see it now!

Dancing Girls

On Lil's readoption day, the girls got a package in the mail -

Beautiful new tutus from our friend, Wendy P!

Lil, asking for a fist-bump - she is a huge fan of the fist-bump, especially the exploding fist-bumps.

Thanks, Wendy!  We look forward to many fun days of fancy dancing!!

I threw this picture in even though neither girl is looking at the camera, but look how big Lil is getting!  She's growing so much!

Pesky Lego Guys

Sometimes you leave your computer for just a moment,

and you return to discover that Lego Santa has taken over to work on a spreadsheet.

It's no wonder I can't get anything done some days!

Shhhhhh....

Don't tell the other Wisconsinites, but I didn't watch the Super Bowl.

Instead I went to see Wicked -- and it was the BEST play I've ever seen!!!

AND, not only was it an awesome show, but because it's Wisconsin and the Packers were in the Super Bowl, the tickets were half-price.  Can't pass that up!

Quarantined!

We're all staying home today -- strep has joined our family.

In addition to that, Ruby has scarlet fever -- who knew that was still around?  Apparently it's a rash caused by the strep virus, and where it USED to be life threatening, with the advent of antibiotics it's not a big deal.

Still ... it is what the little boy had in The Velveteen Rabbit, so it sounds serious & ominous, doesn't it?

I brought the Littles in to the doctor yesterday afternoon, and as soon as we left I had Brian call & make appointments for the older two.  Braden's so susceptible to strep ... I figured we couldn't chance it.  And guess what?  More positive tests.

Then we had a confusing conversation on the way home about is positive bad and negative good?  -- only when it comes to strep tests!

Last night Ruby's heart rate was so high, I called the on-call nurse.  It was nothing extreme for a 3 year old with a fever and strep, but I knew I wouldn't sleep well unless I had looked into it.

This morning everyone seems to be feeling okay ... definitely a step up from completely miserable!

We've all got a prescription for antibiotics and we're all home today.  Tomorrow we'll begin sanitizing the house -- washing bedding, throwing out toothbrushes.

Will you do me a favor?

Please spread the word & please go visit Patti's blog -- she has some amazing items in a giveaway; trying to raise funds for 3 little ones on Reece's Rainbow... and if you happen to win that camera, can I play with it?!

This is probably the best chance little Peter will ever have to finding a family, so please -- spread the word.  Patti is trying to get him a full grant -- $20,000 -- so a family can easily adopt him.

Peter, this little boy who is always lying down or propped up in pictures, is the same age as my Ruby.  He's actually a few months older ... and he's nearing his 4th birthday.  When he turns 4, he won't be showered in gifts & love from his family; he won't be headed to 4-year-old kindergarten next year like Ruby -- he'll be transferred to an institution.

Patti is also fundraising for 2 beautiful little girls -- Kareen (who now has a family working on her adoption!)
