Karly & I spent the day in Milwaukee yesterday (which if you're on Facebook, you probably already know!)
She had 3 different appointments at Children's - and we had her bloodwork done locally, earlier in the week, and her counts were great.
First off yesterday, she had an audiology screening - one of her chemo drugs can affect hearing, so we just needed a follow-up to make sure the Cisplatin hadn't done any damage. All clear - and unless she develops a hearing problem in the future, she won't need that test again!
Then, she had an ultrasound, to check for any tumor growth. This was her first u/s since the one that originally
found the tumor in November 2007. Since then, they've done CT Scans throughout her care and afterwards. Going back to u/s is a step in the right direction - they're less invasive (no IV, no contrast, no radiation involved) but man it wasn't easy. Not only did it freak me out because that's how we originally found the tumor, but yesterday was
December 4 - and the anniversary of when we found out we were expecting twins.
So, while it was easier on Karly, it was rough on me. I kept thinking the u/s tech probably found a tumor & just couldn't tell me - especially when she asked if we have other appointments today that we'd need the results for ...
That was our third stop - the HOT Clinic. HOT is Hematology, Oncology & Transfusion - and some of the nicest people you'll ever meet, but we really don't mind not visiting them every few weeks. We got in for our appointment early and left the clinic at the time our appointment was scheduled to begin. There was absolutely NOTHING to worry about, Karly looks great - and we'll go back in 4 months. Just think - we could possibly make it the entire winter without a trip to Children's in Milwaukee!
We ran into one of our usual clinic nurses while we were on our way out & Karly called out her name & gave her a big hug (which is pretty impressive, Karly's not usually great at putting names to faces - and she's typically pretty reserved about hugs.) The nurse asked when we'd be back and I told her March, "We're not frequent fliers anymore!" Karly thought that was pretty funny.
