Deep Thought
Why does the speedometer of my MINIVAN go to 160mph?
I'm pretty sure that's not legal in a school zone...

Blog? What blog?
I know I've been a little negligent in the blogging lately, but I have a good reason. We've been busy - and I've been reading a lot of library books. I've been reading the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris - don't judge me, but yeah, they have vampires in them. These? Are just funny, though. And we watched the TV show that's based on these books, True Blood on HBO ... so, while we wait for season two, I thought I'd pick up the books. They're quick, fun reads - but yeah, they eat up my free time.
My other major time-suck? SCRABBLE! I made Brian join Facebook this weekend, just so he could play Scrabble with me, too. It's awesome! We used to play the actual boardgame, way back before we had little kids who would probably eat the pieces or just scatter them around the house.
(so if you want to play Scrabble with me, too, I'm totally up for it!)
Also? These kids are just highly entertaining. They keep us very amused. I have some new pictures, I'll put up this week, in case you find them amusing, too.
And really, sometimes it's just hard to blog ... hard to think of something interesting to say ... because we're happy & all - but the world moves on, and we'll never have all four of our kids with us, and that sucks. The older Ruby gets, the further away from baby Lydia she gets - and that just leaves us to wonder what Lydia would be like at this age, and how would she be different than Ruby? Would they play well together (and would they gang up on Braden and attack his toys together?) So. We miss her, and there's a hole in our lives that will never be filled ... and sometimes, I just want to point that out, and remind people about Lydia, but I don't know how to do that, elegantly.

Hanging Out with Thomas
Michelle's out all day today (and last night, actually) at a big scrapbooking event, so it's just been me with the three kids.Thankfully , Braden loves to help entertain Ruby.
He asked to get out his pop-up Thomas tent, just so he could have Ruby come inside with him. They both had a blast:

A Round-up Post
Ruby has a bad cold; she's been sick since Monday. We cleared her schedule all week, canceling appointments & laying low at home. And while she hates getting her nose wiped, if we bring a kleenex to her face and say, "Ruby, will you blow your nose?" she will then wipe her nose on the kleenex. SO CUTE!
We were supposed to go to Madison this week for a followup for Ruby's eye surgery, but with her cold, we rescheduled.
Karly's toe is so much better! She'll finish up her antibiotics this weekend.
And a huge new thing - Karly's getting bused to school! We didn't set up busing for a long time, since she was going at such strange times as missing so much school. Now, she's there almost all day, every day. It's so nice to have less running around to do - and Karly's really enjoying riding the bus. It's a special needs bus, so there are only 4 kids on her bus after school - really helps keep her anxiety low, and keeps her safe, since she's still not 100%.
And Braden? Well, in addition to playing with Legos, he's also been obsessed with Legos. And then? Some more Legos. Sometimes he even comes out of his room to eat - or ask us to help him take apart some particularly tricky Legos. But mostly, he likes Legos.

Happy Inauguration Day
I can't say that I've ever watched an entire Presidential Inauguration before - but I did today. And it was pretty awesome, seeing the crowds of people! Wow, were there a lot of people there! Amazing.
After school today, I asked the kids if they knew who our new president was - and Braden said very clearly, "Barack Obama ... but my teacher said we should now call him Prisoner Obama."
Oh my goodness - it was so hard not to laugh at that one! We did practice saying President this evening.

Snowflakes
Last year, I wanted to get a Christmas ornament for Lydia. I knew I wanted to have something I could collect yearly - but it took me a while to find what I wanted, since I've never really been a big angel collector type person (even though I am a fan of Clarence).
Then Karly got sick in November 2007, and things got too busy. When I got around to it, it was already almost New Years, but I found just what I was looking for (and got it at more than 50% off!)
Somewhere, I had read something about snowflakes representing lost babies - each one delicate and unique, and only with us for a short time. So, I went searching for snowflake ornaments and found the perfect thing - Swarovski makes a snowflake ornament each year. They're beautiful, about 3" big, hang from a blue ribbon, and have a little metal marker with the year on it.
This is the 2007 snowflake:

And 2008:

When we decorated for Christmas, I hung last year's snowflake in the window, with the prism my friend gave me after Lydia died. The kids love the rainbows these make. A couple weeks ago, my 2008 snowflake came in the mail and I hung it, too, in the window (I ordered it late again this year, because I'm a sucker for a bargain). I'm not sure if you can see them in this picture - but they're very pretty.

Last year, when winter was over I couldn't bring myself to putting it away, so I set the snowflake back in its box and left it in the curio cabinet in our kitchen that holds Lydia's other keepsakes.
It took me so long to find something that I was happy with, something I thought did justice to memorialize Lydia for us over the holidays, so I thought I'd share this.

Cool Tricks
Thursday, Ruby gave me a high five! Daddy taught her a new trick. Soooo cute!
(And since that was pretty short to be a post, I thought I'd throw a couple pictures in.)
This is Ruby's expression every time we get the camera out lately -
This picture's a little fuzzy, but Ruby looks so sweet -

Caught on Video: Ruby Takes a Step!
Okay ... so, ALMOST caught on video.
I mean, she takes a step, but you can't actually see her feet at the time. But you can see her reaction to it.
I had Ruby in her onesie the other day, while I was putting her into her jammies - and she really enjoys being able to walk around with bare feet.
She's taken a step or two every now & then - it's so exciting!
Anyway ... thought you'd like to see her on the move - and check out those cute little chubby legs!

Busy Days
Oh my gosh, I can't believe I missed another day of blogging! We've been pretty busy around here - and NOW ... no school today or tomorrow, due to the COLD - like 40 below, with the wind chill. It's just so freakin' cold, so we didn't even leave the house today.

Yesterday (Wednesday), Karly had a doctor's appointment - just a quick check on her new hormone medications. I thought it would be quick & easy ... and as we're sitting there talking to the nurse, waiting for the doctor, Karly mentions her toe hurts ... so, long story short it's majorly infected.
In fact, the doctor we were there to see, the pediatric gynecologist went & grabbed our regular pediatrician (Dr. B) to look at it, too. They even did a culture (as Dr. S said, This is Karly; we need to be extra cautious!) Dr. B called me today - Karly's got 2 types of germs growing on her toe - strep and staph.
Did you know you could get a strep infection somewhere other than your throat? I had NO idea. Anyway, she's now on antibiotics & soaking her poor red toe a couple times a day.

Braden wanted a picture taken with Ruby tonight (Karly was soaking her toe, so she was out of reach!)

This & That
Please, continue to delurk if you haven't yet - I love all the comments! And did you know you can comment on any post, at any time? We get an email alert, so even if it's a post from last year, we know when there are new comments. Anyway - if anything's going to keep me posting every day, it's the amount of comments we've received so far! (Although, 3 are from one person, my friend Jayne...)
Ruby's been ON THE GO. Brian left his work laptop on the couch yesterday, and in the minute he was out of the room she removed the 'Enter' key. Such a stinker!!
This morning, Ruby & I braved the single-digit temps to go get her fitted for her Sure Steps. It went as well as it could - I mean, her feet are SO SMALL, and they NEVER stopped moving! It was wiggle, wiggle, wiggle every moment!
* * * * * * * *
Brian & Braden brought Karly to school while we were gone - and Braden asked Dad, "How old will Ruby be this summer?"
Brian told him she'll be two.
Braden said, "Wow! That's so surprising!"
I love his vocabulary - he cracks us up!
* * * * * * * *
Then this afternoon, Ruby & I went to WIC. Ruby gets WIC through a special program (if you live in Wisconsin & have a child with Katie Beckett, they also get WIC. It's awesome! Good healthy food for kids).
Anyway - they weighed her and .... drumroll please .... FULLY CLOTHED - she's 22 pounds. Woo hoo!! and she's 28 3/4 inches long.
In November, when we had that stressful appointment for Ruby, she was 18 pounds, 6.4 ounces and 28.5 inches. She's growing!
Someone asked me the other day what Ruby weighed now - and I didn't know. Isn't that funny? For months, I was obsessed, and the county nurse weighed her weekly ... and now, not even an issue. I like that. I like it a lot!
She still sits rear-facing in the car, and I think we'll keep her that way until spring, since it's such a monstrously icy winter. She's perfectly content how she is now, so we'll just leave it be.
* * * * * * * *
I want to give a big shout out to my wonderful husband. Because today, Ruby had THREE dirty diapers - and I didn't change one of them. He's a keeper!

Ruby at 20 Months!
Ruby's starting to outgrow her 12 month clothes - look at her ankles peeking out when she sits down!

Friday Ruby turned 20 months old, and I couldn't take it anymore - so I brought her in for a haircut. Her hair was still always hanging in her face, so she now has more bangs, and a nice, neat trim.
Ruby sat pretty well for her haircut (I knelt next to her, and fortunately it was quick.) The beautician put her hair in this adorable simple ponytail, which helped keep it out of her face, too.
If you want a better look at her hair, you can always click on any picture to enlarge it.

Ruby had to help Daddy work! She was clicking on those keys so much, it really sounded as if she were typing.

Karly Update
Karly is back to school for longer days - and next week even longer. She'll still be missing one class & the morning 'homeroom' time, but we don't want to push her too much (school starts at 7:30; she'll be starting at 8:55). She was very tired every day after school, but she made it through the week.
Friday, however, she was late for school. Because that morning we had a road trip to Green Bay. Karly had a 6 month follow-up for radiation. (I KNOW! Can you believe it's been 6 months since she finished radiation?!?)
And guess what? That's a wrap. She's done. We don't even have to go back for a follow-up visit. The nurse & doctor asked her some questions, looked her over - and that was that. She's doing great, as far as recovery from radiation goes.
In other news ...
Hormone Replacement Therapy = awesome!
Karly began getting hormones shortly after this last Karly update in December, and already they've made a huge improvement in her mood and ability to control her behaviors.
Karly took over my laptop the other night to do some shopping online... she has a gift certificate from Christmas and is meticulously checking out her options.

Ruby Pics
Brian can't believe I did a Ruby Report with NO pictures!? My only excuse was it was late, and I didn't feel like downloading pictures from the camera. So, I just hooked up the camera - and these awesome pictures popped up!
The other morning, Ruby was playing with her baby ... and making cheesy faces for the camera!

Ruby Report (the 't' is silent)
Did you miss me yesterday? Sorry about that. This week has been super busy, but productive.
Ruby's had speech, occupational therapy, and physical therapy this week - what a way to jump back into routine!
Ruby's had an explosion of signing lately! I think she's learned three new signs this week. And not only can she sign them, she uses them spontaneously and to demand things.
So now, she can sign:
It is SO MUCH FUN when she communicates with us. She still gets frustrated with us at times, but she keeps trying to teach us what she's talking about.
We're going to get Ruby some Sure Steps for ankle support. She's able to stand up on her own, and walks really, really well with her push toys. She's taken a step here or there, but she's pretty unsteady ... but it seems she finally has the motivation to walk, so I'm sure the extra help with be a good thing!
Ruby figured out she can use her new chair to climb up onto the couch. Isn't that fun? She's also really into opening toilets, and throwing herself into the tub.
Today? She took the heat vent out of the dining room floor and stuck her hand into it to play with all the dust and cobwebs. Also, Brian spent the better part of the morning rearranging computer equipment in the office because she's figured out how to reboot his computer, unplug the mouse, and mess with several other things. Such a stinker!
Ruby's definitely on a mission to take over the world - or at least retain control of our house.

- Wake up!
- bath (New today!)
- tickle belly (we kind of made this sign up)
- twinkle, twinkle (as we sing the song)
- so big! (is that really a sign, or just a fun thing for babies to do?)

My, aren't I observant?
So when I quickly blogged last night, in my excitement for our last-minute date, I forgot I had already scheduled a blog post for yesterday. Ha!
We had a great time. And I'm not ready at all for real life to resume!
This week? We have EIGHT therapy or doctor appointments for the girls, an IEP (school) meeting for Karly, I have bowling and bunco (that's new! I'm so excited!), the little kids have music classes, and we have to go to the closing for our refinancing. Plus shuttling Karly & Braden to school & back every day.
That's a pretty typical week for us, so it's totally managable - it's just shocking to look at our calendar after having two weeks off of pretty much everything.
It was a lovely, wonderful vacation. Our 'appointments' were playdates - and we didn't have to leave the house unless we wanted to.
Here we go ... back to reality!

Sooo.... one of our favorite sitters is home from college, so we're totally taking advantage of Brian's last day off and going out to dinner.

Count this!
All of a sudden, Braden can count. I mean, he's been able to count for a while, up to about 29 and then he'd lose his place or lose interest. Every now & then he'd get stuck on three-teen (or skip it all together).
This fall, right after school started, he became very preoccupied with the number 100 - and sometimes 101.
In the past couple weeks, it's like he's just "got it" and he's figured out how numbers have a pattern (or, as he'd say, a patter-wan ... which, to me, seems to be a bit of a Star Wars influence, since a Jedi in training is a Padawan. Or something. It's a Star Wars word, though).
At dinner on Thursday, we had to put Braden on hold at 161, so he would eat.

Haiku Friday: Late Night

It's a jungle out
there - Monk marathon keeping
me awake so late.
Ruby fought sleep; so
cute - hard to complain about
extra cuddle time.
Frustrating, yes, when
Ruby pulls a late-nighter -
yet it's nice time, too.
Reading books, feeding
her baby dolly, rocking -
I'll miss this some day.

I'll miss this some day.

Kellsey
There's an amazing organization out there called Reese's Rainbow. They help facilitate adoptions for children with Down syndrome (and other special needs, but DS is their focus) around the world. Many of these kids would be institutionalized if they're not adopted by the age of 4 or 5.
I follow a few blogs who have been through this adoption process (and usually, they have a child with DS of their own, who inspires them to adopt another) - and the latest family beginning an adoption is the wonderful "Special K" family. They, too, have a child with Down syndrom - their 4-year-old 'Sincess' (Princess) Kennedy. Kennedy also happens to be a cancer survivor, and this past July had major surgery (she had a spine fusion surgery).
If you want to follow along - or feel inclined to donate a few dollars, I know they'd really appreciate it.
So ... I'm putting Kellsey's button in my sidebar, and just wanted to tell you what it was about! You can always click on her button, to go to Kellsey's blog & read about their adoption process.
